{CONNECTICUT HIGHWAY ASSISTANCE MOTORIST PATROL (CHAMP)} CHAMP began along the I-95 Corridor in 1996 and the Hartford area in September of 1999.  The service is provided each weekday between 5:30 A.M. through 7:00 P.M. and selected holidays and Sundays and provides motorist assistance such as changing flat tires, jump starting, pushing vehicles to shoulders, providing fuel and offering shelter.  In addition, the service patrols react to accidents and notify Highway Operations Centers in Newington and Bridgeport of the need for State Police, medical, fire and/or other emergency response.  The drivers remove highway debris and dead animals; report damaged guardrail, illumination and drainage problems, and provide travel assistance to motorists on the highway.
