New 200-Space Parking Facility Opens at Old Saybrook Train Station

Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman today joined Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker and other state and local officials in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to mark the opening of a new 200-space parking facility at the Old Saybrook train station on Shore Line East – the commuter rail line between New Haven and New London.

“If we are going to get people out of their cars and onto public transportation, we have to make our trains and stations clean, safe, reliable and convenient,” said Lieutenant Governor Wyman. “In recent years, Connecticut has literally invested billions of dollars for our rail commuters and others using our service. This includes Shore Line East, the New Haven Line and the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Line.”

CTDOT Commissioner Redeker said that there will now be a total of 324 parking spaces at the Old Saybrook station, and noted that parking at all Shore Line East stations is free.

The $2.5 million expanded parking project also included a bus shelter for greater connectivity for customers, as well as sidewalks, fencing, drainage and landscaping. Still to come is an ADA-accessible ramp, which should be completed later this year.

Old Saybrook is one of nine stations on Shore Line East – the 67-mile-long commuter rail line between New Haven and New London.  Other stations are in New Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Westbrook and New London.

CTDOT is currently adding parking at the Branford station, which will bring the total number of spaces there to 525.

Shore Line East has about 660,000 passengers a year. The line is owned and operated by Amtrak.
