The Department of Information Technology would like to make all vendors performing web consulting services under any State of Connecticut IT Contract aware of the Policy regarding "Universal Web Site Accessibility for State Web Sites".
On July 10, 2000, the tenth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Department of Information Technology (DOIT) and the ConneCT Management Advisory Committee (CMAC) announced an initiative to improve the accessibility of state government web sites to people with disabilities, including more than 100,000 state residents with visual impairments.
The Universal Web Site Accessibility Policy for State Web Sites requires information and services on Connecticut State Government Web Sites are/be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. It is the responsibility of the agency and its web page developers to become familiar with the guidelines for achieving universal accessibility and to apply these principles in designing and creating any official State of Connecticut Web site.
The CMAC Web Accessibility Subcommittee has set up procedures to certify all state web sites that meet the guidelines of the policy. Web page developers unfamiliar with the certification process should refer to the the "Six Steps to Certification".
For more information, please contact Kathleen Anderson, Chair of the CMAC Website Accessibility Subcommittee. She is managing this initiative and can be e-mailed at kathleen.anderson@po.state.ct.us.
