Investigation Unit

SERVICE ADVISORY:  DMV will close for the Labor Day holiday as usual on Friday, Sept. 4, at 12:30 p.m. and will not have its half-day office hours the next day, Saturday. This follows contractual agreements related to state and federal holidays that occur on Mondays as Labor Day does. Offices will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:45 a.m. 
 
This DMV Unit investigates complaints received from the citizens of Connecticut, tax assessors and police departments with regard to any criminal matter in which the Connecticut DMV or a customer is a victim; or regarding vehicles registered out-of-state that are owned by someone residing in Connecticut.
 

Registration Compliance cases must include:

  • The name of the person
  • Their Connecticut address
  • The out-of-state license plate number displayed on the vehicle
  • Any other pertinent information that will assist in our investigation.

A resident of this state who operates a motor vehicle he or she owns with license plates issued by another state shall be fined $1,000.

 

Below are the Connecticut General Statutes pertaining to residents who fail to obtain a Connecticut driver's license or vehicle registration.

 

Definition of CT resident:              CGS 14-1

Fail to register your vehicle in CT:  CGS 14-12(a)     

Fail to obtain a CT license:           CGS 14-36(b)(2)
