Definition of a Commercial Motor Vehicle

Holiday Closing:  On Friday, October 5, DMV offices will close at 12:30 p.m. to observe the Columbus Day holiday.  Offices will remain closed on Saturday, October 6, and will reopen on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:45 a.m. 


Effective January 01, 2018 the DMV will start collecting a $75.00 fee for State criminal background check for each Public Service Endorsement applicant. This fee will be in addition to the $12.00 FBI fee.

A commercial motor vehicle can be defined as: 

  • Vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds
  • Vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver
  • Vehicle designed to transport 11 or more passengers, including the driver, and used to transport students under the age twenty-one years of age to and from school
  • Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials which is required to be placarded.
