Taking the Vision and Knowledge Tests
All applicants seeking a learner's permit can schedule ONLINE for a quick, easy and convenient appointment for the vision and knowledge test.
In addition, the following DMV offices conduct vision and knowledge testing on a walk-in basis:
Based on heavier customer volume on some days and hours, longer waiting times may be experienced. We ask for your patience, and in some cases, may suggest coming back on another day for testing or schedule an appointment ONLINE.
Taking the Eye (Vision) and Law (Knowledge) Test:
You must be prepared with all necessary documents before vision and knowledge testing will be given. Photocopies or faxed copies of any documents are not acceptable.
To begin testing you will need to bring:

NOTE: Puerto Rico-issued birth certificates dated before July 1, 2010, need to be replaced. Please see more detailed information.
- Completed Application for Driver License (form R-229).

- Connecticut Identification Card (If applicable – this ID card must be surrendered when the driver’s license is issued).
The Vision Test Evaluates:
Acuity (how clearly you see).
Peripheral vision (how far you can see to either side while looking straight ahead).
Depth and color perception.
The minimal vision requirements for all classes of license is at least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses or contact lenses. If the applicant is blind in one eye, the other eye must be at least 20/30.
The Knowledge Test:
- The knowledge test is based on the information contained in the Connecticut Driver's Manual.
- The exam consists of 25 questions. An applicant needs 20 correct answers to pass.
Failing the Knowledge Test:
If you fail the knowledge test portion you must wait one week (7 days) before you can take the test again and must repay the License Exam Fee.
- Knowledge test results are valid for 2 years.
