DMV Expands Learner’s Permit Test Appointments
to Hamden Office

WETHERSFIELD – The Department of Motor Vehicles today opened its sixth new test-by-appointment center for learner's permits with Hamden joining Bridgeport, Cheshire, Norwalk, Wethersfield and Willimantic.

Any teen or adult needing a learner's permit can go to ct.gov/DMV to schedule an appointment. The DMV Hamden office will take appointments beginning today for the December 3 start of testing there. The Hamden Office is located at 1985 State Street. The five other offices already are testing by appointment.

This test-by-appointment system is part of a new and growing service DMV is offering to help customers avoid waiting in line. It captures DMV's efforts to better integrate technology that produces taxpayer savings and makes government more responsive.

“We are very pleased that our popular online system continues to expand and gives customers another location for this online service to make an appointment for this test,” said DMV Commissioner Melody A. Currey.

The appointment process will replace the Hamden office’s current walk-in and wait for learner’s permit tests.  Customers should go soon to ct.gov/dmv to book appointments because schedules fill quickly.

An overwhelming majority – 93 percent – of over 13,000 customers using DMV’s appointment system since opening in May 2012 report being “very satisfied” with the entire process.

With a home computer, portable laptop, tablet, smartphone or any device with an internet connection someone can schedule the learner’s permit knowledge test for a specific day at one of DMV’s test centers offering appointments. Computers with internet access are also in the test center offices to make an appointment or can be found at places such as a local public library for access to the internet-based system.

After entering required information, a $59 payment for the learner’s permit test must be made through a major credit card or electronic check. There are no extra charges for making an online appointment.
