The Remembrance Quilt

{Gone But Not Forgotten image of two faces in black and white} Every year, approximately 570,00 people die from substance use disorders in the United States. To help their loved ones cope with their loss, DMHAS is working with organizations throughout the state to make a series of Remembrance Quilts in memory of those we have lost to addiction. The quilts will be displayed across the stateóat schools, community forums and other eventsóto help raise awareness about addiction and resources available to help promote recovery. Family, friends and loved ones are encouraged to create a square as a tribute to their loved one to be added to the Remembrance Quilt.

You donít have to be an artist or sewing expert to create a moving personal tribute remembering a life lost to substance use disorder, but you do have to make a square in order to add a name to The Remembrance Quilt. Itís not as complicated as many people think, though. It doesnít matter if you use paint or fine needlework, iron-on transfers or hand-made appliques, or even spray paint on a sheet; any remembrance is appropriate.

You may choose to create a square privately as a personal memorial or you may choose to follow the traditions of old-fashioned quilting bees by including friends, family, and co-workers. That choice, like virtually everything else involved in making a square, is completely up to you.
If you or someone you know wants help for a substance use disorder, please call 1-800-563-4086 at any time, day or night. Recovery is possible and help is available.
