STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE HARTFORD POLICE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

On January 25, 2014, at approximately 4:47 a.m., reports of shots fired were detected in the area of Lenox Street via the Shot Spotter.  At approximately the same time, two Hartford Police Officers were in the area and observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.  These Hartford Police Officers observed the vehicle turn onto Winchester Street, at which time a motor vehicle stop was initiated.  Upon stopping the vehicle the lone operator exited the vehicle and fled on foot behind residential homes.  During this foot pursuit gunfire was exchanged by both the fleeing suspect and a Hartford Police Officer.  The suspect was struck and presumed dead at the scene.

The Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Unit is investigating this
incident, led by the Hartford Office of The State’s Attorney and assisted by the Hartford Police Department

The involved Hartford Police Officers are identified Randall Finucane, with nearly two years of service, and Craig McLennan, with 2 ½ years of service.  Officer Finucane was evaluated at an area hospital for possible injuries and subsequently released.

The identity of the deceased suspect is being withheld at this time while notifications are made to family and a post mortem examination is to be conducted by the Office of the Chief States Medical Examiner.
