CONNECTICUT STATE POLICE ASSIST IN TEXAS HOMICIDE CASE;

VICTIM MISSING FROM CT SINCE 1982

   On 08/29/13, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children contacted the Connecticut State Police Missing Person Unit and requested assistance in a criminal investigation regarding a missing 15-year-old female juvenile from New London Connecticut who was last seen on 06/01/82.

   This female was identified as Garvey, Michelle (DOB: 06/03/67).  It was believed that Garvey had run away from home and was possibly traveling to either New Jersey or North Carolina.

   State Police Missing Person Detectives initiated an investigation and met with family members of the missing female.  DNA reference samples were taken and submitted to the University of North Texas in Fort Worth, TX, which is the science laboratory component of NamUs.  As a result of the DNA submission to Texas, it was learned that an unidentified female homicide victim in Houston, Texas, was positively identified as the missing person from Connecticut. Michelle Garvey.

   Garveyís body was found in an open field in Houston on 07/01/82 and her death was ruled a homicide. Harris County Institute of Forensic Science (Medical Examiner), without any knowledge of the Connecticut investigation, exhumed the unidentified body in an effort to obtain DNA samples, which led to the comparison made by the NamUs databank.

   The family of Michelle Garvey has been notified of the identification and efforts are being made to have the deceased returned to Connecticut for burial.

   This investigation is continuing by the Connecticut State Police Missing Person Unit.
