** UPDATE **
STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE HARTFORD POLICE SHOOTING
On 05/15/13, at approximately 10:01 p.m., Hartford Police Officers responded to a reported disturbance at 24 Heath Street in Hartford.
Upon arrival, officers investigated and determined that a possible suspect in the disturbance had retreated to his apartment in the building. The responding officers also observed blood leading to the suspectís apartment. Officers entered the apartment and were confronted with a male holding an edged weapon.
The Hartford Officers ordered the suspect to disarm and drop the weapon. The suspect advanced and lunged at the officer in a threatening manner with the weapon, causing the officer to discharge his service weapon striking the suspect. EMS provided emergency care at the scene and transported the male suspect to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The two Hartford Officers were also taken to Hartford Hospital, treated and released.
At the request of Hartford Stateís Attorney Gail Hardy and the Hartford Police Chief, the State Police Central District Major Crime Squad Detectives responded to conduct the investigation into this police shooting. Detectives processed and documented the scene, collecting physical and forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses.
The deceased has been tentatively identified by State Police investigators, but that information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
A post mortem examination of the deceased will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Stateís Medical Examiner to determine the manner and cause of death.
The Hartford Police Officers who were involved in this incident are identified as:
Officer Richard Cotto 4.5 years of service
Officer Johnny Muniz 4.5 years of service
As is department protocol, the two officers are being assigned to administrative duty pending a review of this incident.

The deceased suspect is identified as Jesus Espinosa, DOB: 12/18/1961.
The State Police investigation into this incident is continuing.
