STATE POLICE LOCATE SUSPECT ACCUSED OF SHOOTING WILLIMANTIC POLICE OFFICER

At approximately 11:15 a.m. on June 25, 2013, the Willimantic Police Department was dispatched to a residence located at 31 Tuxis Lane Willimantic.  The call requested that the officer to conduct a well-being check on an individual who lives at the residence.

Upon entering the home, a male subject shot the responding Willimantic Officer and he then fled the scene on foot. The wounded officer called for assistance at the scene. The Willimantic Officer was transported at Windham Hospital Emergency room where he is admitted suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The shooter fled from the home into the surrounding neighborhood and then into an adjacent wooded area. Willimantic Police gave chase and the State Police was contacted for assistance.

State Troopers from Troop C and Troop K, as well as off-duty Troopers and State Police Detectives, responded to the area of this incident.  Additionally, local officers from Norwich, Coventry, Putnam, Hartford, Eastern CT State University, Plainfield, Groton City PD and UCONN responded as well.

A perimeter was established and the State Police Helicopter Trooper 1 was deployed, as well as several CSP K-9 teams.  The suspect was observed in the neighborhood and an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police took place.

The suspect continued to flee and was located by a State Police K-9 in the area of the IGA Supermarket on Rt. 32.  He was taken into custody by State Troopers with the assistance of the CSP K-9. The accused was transported to Windham Hospital for treatment of a minor K-9 wound.

A subsequent search of the residence located at 31 Tuxis Lane revealed another deceased male inside the residence.  This scene appears to be a homicide scene;  the area was secured.

At the request of the Willimantic Police Chief and the State’s Attorney, the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad will investigate the exchange of gunfire and the Eastern District Major Crime Squad will investigate the shooting of the Willimantic police officer.  The investigations remain active. No identities are being revealed at this time.
