STATE POLICE FIRE & EXPLOSION UNIT RESPOND TO STERLING INCIDENT
Today, May 10, 2013, fire, EMS, and State Police responded to an emergency call reporting that an explosion had occurred at the Austin Powder Company, 332 Ekonk Hill Road, in Sterling CT. The initial report indicated that one person had sustained injury form the incident. Local fire, & EMS and State Police responded to the scene and immediately provided emergency care to the one injured person. He was transported to Backus Hospital by ambulance with reported burn injury.
Firefighters secured the facility and evacuated the company employees from the facility to a safe distance. The local fire marshal requested the response of the State Police Fire & Explosion Unit Troopers to conduct this investigation.
FBI, ATF, DEEP and State Police Emergency Services Bomb Squad also responded to the scene to work with local fire officials.
All investigative agencies remain on scene as a precautionary measure and for monitoring of the substances. A box trailer adjacent to the building is badly damaged from acid, and the air in the box trailer contains gas.
Emergency personnel at the scene are waiting for the chemical reaction to finish before sending the appropriate emergency workers in to start the sampling and documenting and performing of the clean up.
Preliminary investigation has determined that this appears to be an industrial accident. State Police Troopers assigned to the Fire & Explosion Unit are conducting the investigation of the incident.
There were no other reported injuries at this scene
