** UPDATE **

On April 8, 2013, shortly before 3 p.m., the Old Saybrook Police Department responded to an armed robbery incident at the Days Inn on Boston Post Road in their town.  Information obtained identified two armed male suspects.  Old Saybrook Police Officers identified a suspect vehicle leaving the area which then engaged them in a motor vehicle pursuit.  State Police Troopers responded to the area to assist in this incident.  The pursued vehicle fled onto Rt. 153 (Essex Road) in Westbrook where it became involved in a motor vehicle collision with a State Trooper’s vehicle.

Following this collision, gunfire was exchanged between two male suspects and a State Trooper.  In attempts to apprehend the suspects, a State Trooper was shot.  The State Trooper was transported from the scene by a fellow Trooper to the nearby Shoreline Medical Center.  He suffered severe, non-life threatening injuries.

A male suspect was transported to the same medical facility where he was later pronounced deceased.  A second male suspect was transported by Lifestar helicopter to Hartford Hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

Led by the Office of the State’s Attorney, the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Unit is investigating these incidents in Old Saybrook and Westbrook.

The roadway was closed in the area of Rt. 153, south of Docs Hill, in Westbrook for an extended period of time to allow the State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad Detectives the ability to process and document the crime scene for physical and forensic evidence.
