** UPDATE **
STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE POLICE SHOOTING IN WILLIMANTIC
 
   On 03/12/13 shortly after 7:53 p.m. Willimantic Police Officers were dispatched to a complaint of a male outside of an apartment building located at the corner of Main and Clark Streets in Willimantic. 
 
   The complaintant stated that this male was acting in a threatening manner while standing outside of the apartment building.
 
  Two Willimantic Officers, upon arrival, encountered the male, who was acting in a threatening manner and he was armed with a hatchet. The officers confronted the male and ordered him to disarm and set the hatchet down
 
   The subject did not comply with the orders of the officers.  One Willimantic Officer utilized his assigned taser unit on the male subject without success. The second officer utilized his service weapon and shot the subject.
 
   The male subject was immediately provided emergency care and transported by EMS to Windham Hospital where shortly after arrival he was pronounced dead.
   The Willimantic officers were not injured during this incident.  The shooting scene was secured by Willimantic Police.  
 
   At the request of the Willimantic Police Chief and the State's Attorney, the Connecticut State Police East Major Crime Squad responded to the scene to conduct the investigation into this police shooting.
 
   State Police Detectives gathered physical and forensic evidence and documented the scene.
 
   The deceased male has been identified but this information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. A post mortem examination will be conducted by the Office of The Chief States Medical Examiner to determine the manner and cause of death. 
 
   ** UPDATE **
 
   A post mortem examination was conducted by the Office of The Chief State's Medical Examiner.  The deceased male has been identified as Daniel Johnston, DOB: 1/22/55, last known address of Willimantic. The Medical examiner determined that the cause of death was gunshot wound.
 
   The Willimantic officers were assigned to administrative assignments pending the conclusion of this investigation. The State Police investigation is continuing.
