STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE THREATENING &
BRIDGEPORT POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTING
On 01/31/2013, shortly before 9 p.m., a security guard for the University of Bridgeport observed a subject attempting to break into an unmarked Bridgeport Police Department vehicle that was parked on Atlantic Street at the intersection with Lafayette Street.
Bridgeport PD was immediately notified and an officer and security guard spotted the subject, at which time a foot pursuit began. During the foot pursuit, the subject took a large knife out of a sheath and began threatening the pursuing officers/security guards with it.
Additional Bridgeport PD units responded to assist and continued to pursue the subject. The suspect entered a small vestibule area of an apartment building at 557 Atlantic Street. Bridgeport Police Officers deployed their tasers and cap-stun several times in an attempt to subdue the armed subject using less than lethal force, however nothing seemed effective on him.
The subject continued to threaten and lunge at the officers with the knife, at which point he was shot multiple times by two of the Bridgeport Police Officers. The suspect was finally subdued and taken into custody, though he continued to fight with EMS workers who provided emergency care to the suspect on scene. The suspect was transported to Bridgeport Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries and is in critical condition.
None of the Bridgeport officers suffered any physical injuries, though one went to St. Vincent’s for observation.
The suspect was identified as Michael Stinson (DOB: 07/27/1977), LKA 185 Cowles Street, Bridgeport. The Bridgeport State’s Attorney’s Office and Bridgeport Police Chief requested that the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad investigate the shooting incident.
The identity of the police officers is being withheld at this time to allow for family notification of this shooting.
This case remains under State Police investigation.
