Today, 1/22/13, at approximately 12:39 a.m., the Putnam Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at a multi-family dwelling located at 6-8 Prospect Street in Putnam.

Upon arrival, Firefighters found the structure fully involved in flame. Fire suppression efforts brought the fire under control but the building sustained heavy damage.  Four people were transported by ambulance to area hospitals for what were reported to be non-life-threatening injuries related to this fire.

Putnam Fire Marshal Norman Perron requested investigative assistance at the fire scene of this dwelling. The involved structure has sustained significant structural damage and required stabilization prior to Troopers and investigators being able to safely enter the building to conduct the fire investigation.  It was reported that two children were unaccounted for and it was believed that they were on the third floor of the building.

Early this afternoon, 1/22/12, two young children were located on the third floor. A 6-month-old child and a 3-year-old child were both found and pronounced dead at the scene. Both deceased were transported to the Office of The Chief State’s Medical Examiner for a post mortem examination to determine the manner and cause of their death.

State Police Fire & Explosion Detectives and Eastern District Major Crime Detectives working with the Putnam Fire Marshal are conducting the origin and cause fire investigation. Fire and Life Safety specialists from the State Fire Marshal’s Office have also responded to examine the multi-family dwelling for any possible code violations.  State Police Major Crime Detectives are conducting the untimely death investigation.  Putnam Police are assisting.

On January 24, 2013, identification of the two deceased children was confirmed as Ava Augur, DOB 4/9/12, and Alexis Augur, DOB 1/6/10.  Cause of death was smoke inhalation; the deaths have been ruled accidental.

   This fire investigation is continuing.
