STATE POLICE DISCOVER LARGE AMOUNT OF CURRENCY DURING TRAFFIC STOP

On September 5, at 12:57 a.m., a Connecticut State Trooper observed an SUV being operated eastbound on Interstate 84 in Tolland without its head-lamps illuminated.

The Trooper conducted a motor vehicle stop between exits 68-69. During the course of the stop, Troopers uncovered a substantial amount of U.S. currency inside the SUV. Further investigation with the assistance of Federal Homeland Security Investigators confirmed that a previously deported felon was suspected of being engaged in bulk cash smuggling.

Recovered from the vehicle were twenty-eight bundles of assorted U.S. currency believed to be in excess of $500,000.00. The suspect, the money and a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero SUV were seized by Homeland Security Officials pending Federal Prosecution.
