Certified Facilities

Certified Connecticut Clean Marinas are recognized by the DEP for their voluntary efforts to operate at standards above and beyond regulatory compliance.  CT Clean Marinas have taken great strides to implement practices which minimize the pollution from mechanical activities, painting and fiberglass repair, hauling and storing boats, fueling, facility management, emergency planning and boater education.

  1. Saybrook Point Inn, Marina & Spa, Old Saybrook
{Photograph of Saybrook Point Inn Marina} DEP awarded Saybrook Point Inn Marina and Spa in Old Saybrook the first Clean Marina certification in June 2003.  The 120-slip marina, part of a larger hotel/spa complex at the mouth of the Connecticut River, has a boat sewage pumpout station open to the public, and collects and recycles used oil, spent lead-acid batteries, newspapers, cardboard, and bottles and cans from its customers.  The marina also prevents drips and spills at the fuel dock, and has a pet walking area equipped with disposal bags.  Marina staff informs customers about clean boating practices through a quarterly customer newsletter.
  1. Harry’s Marine Repair, Westbrook

I {Photograph of Harry} n July 2003, DEP honored Harry’s Marine Repair, a 76-slip facility located on the Patchogue River in Westbrook, as the first marina/full-service boatyard certified as a CT Clean Marina.  Harry’s Marine Repair reuses used antifreeze to winterize the pumpout systems, requires that only dustless vacuum sanders be used for sanding boats, stores customers’ small gas tanks within the secondary containment area for the above-ground gasoline tank, and encourages customers to protect their boats with reusable covers in the winter by providing summer storage for the tarps, thereby reducing the solid waste associated with shrink wrap.  The marina also collects and either reuses or recycles bottles and cans, used oil, used antifreeze, waste batteries, even scrap metal and spent zinc anodes.  The marina has a custom-designed boat sewage pumpout and dump station available to the public, and provides bags for disposal of pet waste.  Harry’s Marine Repair educates customers about their environmental practices by distributing clean boating flyers, and willingly takes customer suggestions on how to improve environmental practices.

 3.    Shennecossett Yacht Club, Groton

{Photograph of Shennecossett Yacht Club} DEP awarded Shennecossett Yacht Club the third Clean Marina certification on Monday, May 31, 2004 as part of their Commissioning Day ceremony.  Shennecossett Yacht Club, a 191 slip and 37 mooring facility for both sail- and powerboats is located on Pine Island Bay in Groton.  Some of the highlighted environmental practices at Shennecossett Yacht Club include collecting and recycling waste antifreeze, oil and lead-acid batteries from customers, and training fuel dock staff to reduce drips and spills of gasoline and diesel fuel by fueling boats carefully using absorbent materials and fuel vent cups to collect overflow and small drips.  Additionally, the yacht club has strict rules for contractors and "do-it-yourselfer" members to ensure that potential pollutants are not released into the environment during boat maintenance activities, including, but not limited to abrasive blasting, paint spraying, scraping, sanding and painting boats.  The yacht club also provides members and the general public with a pumpout station for proper disposal of boat sewage.

All Dodson staff are well trained each year in environmental health and safety topics, and attend monthly safety meetings to address topics of immediate concern, as part of the facility's Risk Management Program.  The attention to detail creates a safer workplace, and a cleaner environment.
