Connecticut Fire Crew Departing for Canada to help Fight Fires

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today announced that a 19-person fire crew will be departing tomorrow (July 20) at 5:00 am from DEEP Eastern District Headquarters in Marlborough (directions below) to assist fighting long-burning wild fires in northern Quebec. Firefighters will assemble at 3:30 am.  The crew, consisting of 19 Connecticut firefighters (nine DEEP employees and 10 private-sector), will be deployed for up to two weeks.
DEEP maintains a roster of agency staff members and personnel from local fire departments who have been certified to fight forest or wildfires.  Crew members must complete a rigorous training program and participate in an annual renewal course.
The crew assisting Canada is under the auspices of the Northeast Forest Fire Compact.  The Compact is a mutual aid agreement between several northeastern states and Eastern Canadian Provinces.
