Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Announces Plein Air Painting Classes at the Kellogg Environmental Center

Karen Bartone, art professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, will present a program on the techniques and enjoyment of plein air painting at Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Plein air painting is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” The style places the artist outdoors to paint images as seen around him.  Participants will learn how to set up and paint the scenery around the pond at Osbornedale State Park using the water, creatures and fields for inspiration.  Karen will guide artists in the experience by focusing on technique and use of paint to enhance the painting. All projects will be completed during the morning session.

Ms. Bartone holds a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Art from Western Connecticut State University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Johnson State College. She is the recipient of numerous awards including two grants from the American Association of University Professors, a post-graduate professional development research fellowship with Hugh O’Donnell, two fellowships to The Vermont Studio Center, and a fellowship to the Chautauqua School of Art.

Her solo exhibitions include shows with the Jane Goodall Institute, Western Connecticut State University and the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.  Her work is also in the collections of Western Connecticut State University and the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association. In addition, she is a part-time lecturer in the Visual Arts Department at Eastern Connecticut State University where she teaches foundation courses in Studio Art including Drawing I, Studio Art Introduction and Two-Dimensional Design Elements.

This program is suitable for ages nine and up.  The program is offered two days, Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  You may select either day when you call to register at 203-734-2513.  All materials and supplies, including paint, will be provided for a fee of $25.00, payable on the day of the workshop. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult.
The Kellogg Environmental Center, operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT, is open 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
