CT DEEP Announces Upcoming Programs at Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) announces the following programs at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT for August and September. Programs for Children and Families
Dinos in Connecticut
Friday, August 10th - 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Enjoy learning which Dinosaurs used to live where you live now! Come in to see great Dinosaur tracks and artifacts. This program is intended for children ages 5-12.
Insect Discovery Walk
Saturday, August 18th - 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Insects are all around us and are some of the most diverse creatures on earth. Join as at the Kellogg Center for a staff led hike to discover many types of insects that we have in Connecticut. Learn about the insects and the many roles they play in our ecosystem. Open to children ages 5 and up.
Cutting Edge Technology of the 1920’s
Friday, August 24th – 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Come and learn about the ideas of a 1920’s gentleman ahead of his time. Mr. Waldo Stewart Kellogg, a Cornell trained architect and the husband of Mrs. Frances Osborne Kellogg, outfitted the Osborne Homestead with innovative technological ideas that made life easier. Ideas included cross-ventilation, reusing ice box melt water and more. Families are welcome.
Celebrate National Vulture Awareness Day
Saturday, September 1st - 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Help us celebrate this special day with a beginners walk and talk at Osbornedale about Connecticut’s Birds of Prey. Intended for children 10 and up, please bring field guides or binoculars if you have them.

Enjoy a talk on the six fine antique clocks housed in the museum. Learn about Connecticut’s rich clock-making tradition and view the beauty of this special mechanical collection.

Learn about the activities of the noted Ansonia-Derby-Shelton Woman’s Club which Frances Kellogg led as president for decades. In this capacity, she brought famous personages to speak and perform in Derby including Amelia Earhart, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Eve Curie, Margaret Bourke-White and many others. Hear about their lives and careers.
Programs for Educators
Food, Land and People (FLP) Educator Workshop: STEM in the Garden
Thursday, August 16th - 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
See how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) come alive using gardens, school grounds and natural settings. Explore applications of environmental study from soil to seed. Full participation will provide 0.5 CEU's. Cost - $40.00 for the full workshop and resources including FLP Resources for Learning Curriculum.
