Trip Limit Adjustment
Effective 0001 hours, Sunday, August 17, 2014 the Connecticut possession limit for the commercial harvest of scup is increased to 1,000 pounds for trawl, fish pot and commercial hook fisheries and 500 pounds for other gear types other than lobster pots, which will remain at 10 fish.
The Department estimates that 46% of the commercial summer period quota allocated to Connecticut has been harvested. The Department projects, that at the current rate of landings, the quota will not be harvested by the end of the summer period on October 31.
Summer Flounder Quota Status: As of August 13, 2014: approximately 66% of the annual quota has been harvested. At the current rate of landings it appears that approximately 95% of the summer flounder quota will be harvested by October 31. The possession limit will remain at 100 pounds.
Black Sea Bass Quota Status: As of August 13, 2014: approximately 78% of the annual quota has been harvested. At the current rate of landings it is estimated that 90% of the black sea bass quota will be harvested by the end of August. Given the already low, 8 fish possession limit, the Department feels that it is not possible to further lower the possession limit to extend the open season through the end of October. Therefore, when 90% of the quota has been harvested the possession limit will be reduced to zero pounds until November 1.
The Department monitors landings and adjusts trip limits according to Department regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes, although this may not always be possible due to rapidly escalating or unanticipated landings. In such circumstances, only a short notification period may be possible.
