DEEP: Attention Connecticut Conch Fishermen and Dealers

Attention Connecticut Conch Fishermen and Dealers:

Connecticut Sea Grant, with CT DEEP Marine Fisheries and CT Dept. Agriculture, Bureau of Aquaculture, invites you to a discussion about Connecticut’s conch fishery

What:    A meeting to discuss the status of Connecticut’s conch fishery, and begin to discuss as a community what management measures might be needed to ensure its long-term sustainability

When: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: CT DEEP Boating Education center (rear building), Old Lyme Marine Headquarters

Why: While licenses for conch fishing are issued by the Bureau of Aquaculture, neither the Bureau nor Marine Fisheries actively manage this fishery. Fishermen and dealers are expressing concern about the size and number of the conch being landed, and suggesting that some measures need to be put in place to keep the fishery viable over the long-term. We would like to explore the possibility of establishing a community-managed fishery for conch.
