DEEP: Lobster Meeting - Season Closure Dates

Lobster Meeting - Season Closure Dates

Wednesday, June 8, 2012

In February 2012, the American Lobster Management Board approved Addendum XVII to the American Lobster Fishery Management Plan. The addendum addressed rebuilding the Southern New England lobster stock and contained measures for lobster conservation management area 6 (Long Island Sound). The Addendum includes a season closure for LMA 6 beginning in 2013 to achieve a 10% reduction in total landings. This closure includes a 2 week gear removal and a 2 week gear replacement grace period during the closed season, where no lobster traps can be baited more than 1 week prior to season reopening.

The Department is looking for comments on which of the four options below to select as the fall closure date, beginning in 2013:

Option 1: Closed September 3 through November 20 (reopens November 21);
Option 2: Closed September 7 through November 28 (reopens November 29);
Option 3: Closed September 10 through December 2 (reopens December 3); or
Option 4: Closed September 15 through December 7 (reopens December 8).

The Department is holding a public meeting on:

7 pm, Wednesday, June 20, 2012
Connecticut DEEP Marine Headquarters
Boating Education Center
333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme CT
