DEEP: Notice to Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen

Notice to Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen

August 3, 2011

ADJUSTMENT

SUMMER FLOUNDER COMMERCIAL FISHERY POSSESSION LIMIT

Effective 0001 hours, Thursday, August 4, 2011 the possession limit for the commercial harvest of summer flounder is increased to 300 pounds.

Summer Flounder Quota Status: As of August 1, 2011: 62% of the annual quota has been harvested. Current summer flounder management measures provide that if on or after August 1, 90% of the commercial summer flounder quota is projected not to be harvested by November 1, the possession limit is to be increased to 300 pounds. This determination was made based on the current weekly landing rate and the landing rates in recent years.

The DEEP monitors landings and adjusts trip limits according to Department regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes, although this may not always be possible due to rapidly escalating or unanticipated landings. In such circumstances, only a short notification period may be possible.
