DEEP: Commercial Black Sea Bass Closure

DEP Marine Fisheries News

Commercial Black Sea Bass Closure

October 28, 2010

Effective immediately, the Connecticut possession limit for the commercial harvest of black sea bass will be reduced to zero pounds for all gear types. No person shall possess and no vessel shall land or have on board black sea bass while on Connecticut’s waters for the remainder of 2010.

The DEP estimates that 100% of the black sea bass quota allocated to Connecticut for 2010 has been landed. State regulations require that landings be prohibited once 100% of the quota has been reported landed.

The DEP monitors landings and adjusts trip limits according to Department regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes, although this may not always be possible due to rapidly escalating or unanticipated landings. In such circumstances, only a short notification period may be possible.
