Commercial and Recreational Tautog (Blackfish) Seasons
August 28, 2008
The recreational tautog fishery will be closed from September 1, 2008 through September 30, inclusive. It will reopen on October 1, 2008.
The commercial tautog fishery will be closed from September 1, 2008 through October 14, 2008, inclusive. It will reopen on October 15, 2008.
Both the recreational and commercial fisheries for tautog will be closed from December 7 through December 31, 2008, inclusive.
On January 4, 2008 the Department of Environmental Protection implemented interim rules regarding the recreational and commercial harvest and possession of tautog. These rules included the seasonal closures above and were necessary to comply with mandatory provisions of the Tautog Fishery Management Plan (FMP) of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. The department initiated formal rule making and held a public hearing on proposed permanent regulations on May 19, 2008. When it became apparent that the formal rule-making process would extend beyond the expiration date of the interim rules, the Commissioner of Environmental Protection closed Connecticut waters to tautog fishing for the above dates under authority of section 26-101 of the Connecticut General Statutes. This closure is necessary to maintain compliance with the FMP.
