DEEP: Notice to Commercial Fishermen Summer Flounder Possession Limit Change

Notice To Commercial Fishermen

February 28, 2007

Summer Flounder Possession Limit Change

Effective 0001 hours Monday, March 5, 2007 the Connecticut Trip Limit for the commercial harvest of summer flounder will be reduced to 50 pounds. No commercial license holder shall possess and no vessel shall land or have on board more than this amount while on Connecticut’s waters after this date, except that vessels which sailed prior to midnight on Wednesday, February 28th and land after 0001 hours on March 5th can land 1,500 pounds at the end of that trip.

State regulations require that the trip limit for summer flounder be reduced from 1,500 to 50 pounds when 45% of the state’s annual quota has been landed. The DEP has estimated that at the current rate of landings, 45% of the state’s annual quota will be harvested by Monday, March 5th. Vessels landing 50 pounds or less after March 5th are not required to call those trips in to DEP dispatch.

The DEP anticipates landings and adjusts trip limits according to state regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes.
