DEEP: Notice to Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen Informational Meeting on Summer Flounder Commercial Fishery Measures for 2007

Notice To Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen

Informational Meeting On Summer Flounder
Commercial Fishery Measures for 2007

The DEP Marine Fisheries Division will hold an informal public meeting to solicit input on 2007 commercial fishery trip limits for summer flounder. Although the summer flounder stock continues to increase in abundance, the growth rate has slowed and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) believes a reduction in the total allowable catch (TAC) is necessary to have any chance of achieving the stock rebuilding goal of the fishery management plan, required by the year 2010.

The NMFS has proposed establishing a TAC for summer flounder of 13 million pounds, which is approximately one half the TAC set for 2006. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will establish its TAC at a meeting in mid-December.

The Marine Fisheries Division is looking for input from commercial fishermen on how to structure commercial trip limits and trip limit adjustment values for the fishermen who will be curtailed by a significant reduction in the TAL, to allow as many fishing opportunities as possible in 2007. The meeting will be held at:
