DEEP: Informational Meeting on Summer Flounder

Informational Meeting On Summer Flounder
Recreational Fishery Measures for 2006

The DEP Marine Fisheries Division is holding an informal public meeting to solicit input on alternatives for meeting a mandated 24% reduction in Connecticut’s recreational harvest of summer flounder in 2006.

Harvest in 2006 must be reduced 24% due to a combination of a smaller coastwide quota being set for 2006 and harvest overages in the recreational fishery in Connecticut last year. Although the summer flounder stock continues to do well, the growth rate in the stock is considerably slower than previously thought and a reduction in quota was required to prevent overfishing.

Connecticut avoided a requirement for even greater harvest reductions (35%) through ASMFC plan Addendum XIII. In this Addendum, some states with harvest underages have agreed not to liberalize regulations in 2006 which will allow Connecticut to take a smaller reduction this year than would otherwise be required and still prevent overfishing on a coastwide basis.

ASMFC has approved five options presented below for 2006. The Department is seeking your input on these options.
