About the North Region

The North Region of the State Department of Developmental Services provides a wide variety of supports and services to individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families in 57 towns and cities in the Greater Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties.
  • There are currently 5,200 people served by the Region.  About 2,680 people live at home with their families.  There are 1,439 who are supported by private residential services and 2,905 supported in private day services.

  • The overall budget for the Region is about $260,000,000 for FY 11.

  • The region will receive about $1,000,000 to provide individual and family grants.  There are two 6-bed respite centers located in Newington and Windsor, and one 6-bed respite center located in Putnam.

  • The Region supports individuals in various settings: CLAs or group homes, Campus setting, CTHs (Community Training Home) and in SLP (Supported Living Programs).  There are individuals directing their own supports through Self Determination and the Individual Support Agreement Process.

  • The Region contracts with approximately 75 private sector agencies to provide residential and adult day programs.

  • There are four office sites in the Region:  Our regional office is located in East Hartford and there are three satellite offices located in Newington, Putnam and Willimantic.

  • The North Region has 818 full time employees, 395 filled part time employees and 31 general worker positions (residents are hired in these positions to do work) and 21 per diems of various kinds i.e. OTís, PTís, LPNís.  This is a total of 1,234 positions representing 8 bargaining unions and managerial staff.
