11th Annual Self Advocate’s Conference is a Success Again

Department of Developmental Services (DDS) Southbury Training School recently hosted the 11th Annual Self Advocate’s Conference on Personal Health and Well Being.  Held in Waterbury at the Courtyard by Marriot, the conference was attended by more than 200 DDS consumers throughout the state.
“Rubberband” provides music at the conference
This year the conference focused on My Live...My Choice and featured Key Note Speakers, Ricardo and Donna Thornton. The Thornton’s shared their life experiences of moving from an institution in Washington, D.C. to the community, their marriage and parenthood.  They shared stories about their friendship and the challenges they faced when learning how to live independently, and advocating for their right to have a child.  The Thornton’s story was the subject of a 60 Minutes report in 1986 and later made into a movie, “Profoundly Normal”, starring Kristie Alley and Delroy Lindo.
In addition to the Thornton’s, DDS Self Advocate Coordinators and conference organizers facilitated presentations about personal choices.  The conference ended with lunch and dancing to the music of the band, “Rubberband”.
