DCP: History of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection

History of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection

The following history was adapted in part from a document originally prepared in 1986 by the Department in honor of Connecticut’s 350th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of consumer protection efforts in the state.

From the establishment of the Dairy and Food Commission in 1886 to the creation of the free-standing Department of Consumer Protection in 1959 and continuing on into the 21st century, there is much pioneering and progress of which to be proud. This history is merely an overview and is not intended as a definitive compilation of all events.
