Consumers were warned today that sprout products produced by Amalgamated Produce Inc. (API) of Bridgeport, Connecticut are being recalled. A sample collected from a supermarket in New York tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. The sprouts have been carried by major grocery stores in Connecticut. Though there are no illnesses reported in Connecticut, API is recalling its sprouts that have the potential to be contaminated. The following products are being recalled. All items have a sell by date code from 3/31/09 through 4/27/09 and are in 4-oz. plastic containers, with the noted exceptions of the 8-oz. Nature’s Promise Organic Alfalfa and the five pound bag of bulk alfalfa sprouts.
Consumers with any of the recalled packages of sprouts should discard the product immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. |
