DCP: Cell Phones

Cell Phones

Cell phones DO NOT come under the purview of any state agency. Currently, there are few laws that specifically govern this industry.

Under federal law, telecommunication companies charge a small fee on their monthly invoice for costs incurred relative to "cell phone number portability." This means that if you change your cellular phone service carrier you may keep the telephone number you are currently using.  The consumer must pay the invoiced surcharge even if he doesn't intend to use the option.  This provision requires that all telecommunications providers allow cell phone number portability.

You may file complaints about cell phone companies or practices with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

You may also register your cell phones with the National Do Not Call Registry. Sign up online, or use your cell phone to call the Registry at 1-888-382-1222.
