The Department of Consumer Protection is responsible for administering a professional licensing and enforcement process to assure that only qualified, competent persons are licensed in the real estate and real estate appraisal professions.
  
Agency staff are responsible for enforcing real estate and appraisal law, as well as overseeing real estate sales, management and appraisals. The Department also conducts field inspections of real estate and appraisal licensees' offices to ensure conformance to state statutes, and investigates consumer complaints.

Complaints and Guaranty Fund
Complaints regarding the conduct of licensed real estate brokers and salespersons must be put in writing to be investigated by the Real Estate Enforcement unit.  Please use the Real Estate Complaint Statement below for all Real Estate complaints.
 
The Department of Consumer Protection offers some relief for consumers who have been victims of a fraudulent real estate deal through the REAL ESTATE GUARANTY FUND.  Application to the Fund may be made against a real estate broker or real estate salesperson, or the unlicensed employee of a licensed broker or salesperson for the following reasons:
(a) embezzlement of money or property,
(b) money or property unlawfully obtained from any person by false pretenses, artifice, trickery or forgery, or
(c) by reason of any fraud, misrepresentation or deceit.
