Consumers Warned About Recalled Sprouts Produced by

Amalgamated Produce Inc. (API) of Bridgeport

HARTFORD, April 9 -- Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. today warned consumers that sprout products produced by Amalgamated Produce Inc. (API) of Bridgeport, Connecticut are being recalled based on a sample collected from a supermarket in New York that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  The sprouts products have been carried by Stop and Shop, Shoprite and Price Chopper stores in Connecticut.

Though there are no illnesses reported in Connecticut, API is recalling its sprouts that have the potential to be contaminated.

The following products are being recalled. All items have a sell by date code from 3/31/09 through 4/27/09 and are in 4-oz. plastic containers, with the noted exceptions of the 8-oz. Nature’s Promise Organic Alfalfa and the five pound bag of bulk alfalfa sprouts.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms from Listeria, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Stores throughout the Northeast and Connecticut have received shipments of these items, and are being directed to remove them immediately from store shelves. Consumer Protection inspectors and the Food and Drug Administration are working with API to determine the source of the contamination. Consumers with sprouts from this company should discard the product immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

The Department of Consumer Protection continues its ongoing work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to assist in the evaluation of recalls of food and other products.
