COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The DSM is the guide most clinicians use to diagnose and plan treatment. In 2007, thirteen workgroups began work to make recommends to the new diagnostic manual. Following a comprehensive review of scientific advancements, targeted research analyses, and clinical expertise, the work groups developed a draft DSM-V diagnostic criteria, which underwent an extensive comment period and field trials. On December 11, 2012, a version was accepted; a release of the final, approved DSM-V is expected in May 2013.

The DSM V promises to be the greatest change in diagnosis since the DSM II. Moving from diagnostic classifications based on differential diagnoses to the use of dimensional descriptors to clarify diagnosis based on empirical research, could well change psychiatry as we have known it. In order to prepare for this transition and correctly bill sessions with the appropriate diagnoses, attendees will:

  • Receive a brief overview of the known changes proposed in the new DSM 5.
  • Learn of the proposed new revisions to the axes for the DSM 5.
  • Be made aware of the new diagnostic changes proposed and the new 20 categories of illness included in the DSM 5.
  • Review the new reconfiguration of the Personality Disorder Section of the DSM.
  • Gain a general understanding of the new direction diagnostic formulation is taking.
  • Learn about the new coding structure and its relevance to the ICD 10 and 11
  • Discuss how the reformulation of trauma, depression, addictions and the inclusion of behavioral addictions will mark a new era in diagnosis.
