The Department of Children and Families is pleased to offer classes and trainings as a means of supporting the work of its provider partners in our collaborative efforts to protect children, improve child and family well-being, and support and preserve families.
Courses are offered free-of-charge to families and contracted providers and range from half-day, to full-day to multiple day offerings. All courses can be specially designed to meet an Agency's specific needs. Although most courses have a direct relationship to the children and/or families who are served within the department's service system, the types of trainings vary markedly. The Academy is currently focusing on four tracks: family-centered practice; trauma and the effects of trauma; child and adolescent development; and foster care.
Trainers: Trainers include experienced DCF staff, professors from local colleges and universities, professionals from other state agencies, providers with expertise in myriad arenas, and partners from the broader community. The goal is to partner providers with department staff for many of the trainings.
We are always interested in collaborating with our community partners who possess expertise in a wide range of areas, who have training experience and would be willing to share this knowledge by training through the Academy , generally pro bono. If you are a teacher/professor or professional who would like to share your expertise, please contact the Provider Academy Director: Lisa.Hofferth@ct.gov
Course Training Locations: Courses are sited primarily within the community in order to expand the ability of families and agencies to attend more locally. If your agency is interested in hosting a training (half-day to several days) of 20 to 25 people, please let us know. Requirements include a room to accommodate the number of participants, parking availability, and audio-visual capabilities. In return for hosting the training, the agency may reserve up to half of the slots in that training.
Have a special Training Need? Looking for a training that isn't listed in the Course Guide? Additional trainings can be arranged. We strongly encourage you to give us your comments and suggestions for additional trainings, as well as about trainings that you find particularly useful. The Academy is involved in many training initiatives for targeted groups which occur through special requests.
If your agency or group has a need for training or facilitation that we may be able to assist with, please contact the Provider Academy Director: Lisa.Hofferth@ct.gov for more information.
Registration: As of December 1, 2011, all registrations are completed online. Simply, go to the course you would like to attend and "register" at the bottom of the page. If the course you selected is full, (after your register) you will be notified via e-mail and your name will be automatically placed on a waiting list for the next time the course is offered.
