The DEEP tracks the health of the environment and natural resources by monitoring surface waters, groundwater, and the air. To monitor the health of the state’s environment, DEP relies on information obtained from field surveys, a sophisticated air quality monitoring network, sampling programs, reports submitted by regulated entities concerning the entity’s discharges or release of toxics. In addition to these efforts, the Department gains further insight as to the health of the environment by conducting habitat studies and resource assessments (i.e., assessments of vegetation, fishery resources, wildlife populations, etc.).
