Melodie Peters, the First Vice President and Director of Organizing of AFT Connecticut, has been appointed by Governor M. Jodi Rell as the 2009 Union Campaign Chair of the Connecticut State Employees' Campaign for Charitable Giving (CSEC). With the recent appointment of Peters', and the earlier approval of Insurance Commissioner Thomas R. Sullivan as the Statewide Campaign Chair, this fall's campaign leadership team is now complete.
In her role as the 2009 Union Campaign Chair, Peters will help the CSEC stay connected with union leaders. Throughout the next two months she will seek their endorsement of the campaign. Specifically, she will submit articles for newsletter publication and web site posting, and will ask union letters to promote the campaign at union steward/membership meetings. When the campaign recognizes and thanks its volunteers and donors next May, both Peters and Sullivan will be invited to personally congratulate and extend their gratitude to all Connecticut State Employees and Retirees.
A former State Senator from the 20th District, Peters was known as the "voice of labor" throughout her tenure in the state legislature. She has been affiliated with AFT Connecticut for more than 20 years and currently serves on the board of directors of the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and John L. Driscoll United Labor Agency.
