Former East Haven Councilman Charged with Election Law Violations

A former member of the East Haven Town Council was arrested today and charged with  unlawfully possessing several absentee ballots in his 2015 campaign for re-election to the council.

VINCENT J. SPADUZZI, age 43, of 113 Gerrish Avenue, East Haven, was arrested by Inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney and charged with three counts of Unlawful Possession of an Absentee Ballot and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Unlawful Possession of an Absentee Ballot.

The arrest is the result of an investigation into a complaint by the State Elections Enforcement Commission into Spaduzzi’s conduct in the course of his successful 2015 campaign for re-election to the East Haven Town Council.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Spaduzzi asked a friend if that individual was going to vote in the 2015 East Haven election, and then went to the friend’s home where he obtained absentee ballots in the names of all three members of the family.

The night before the election, Spaduzzi gave the absentee ballots to an individual who was not authorized by law to possess them to turn in the following day, the warrant states. Spaduzzi, who won re-election in 2015, no longer serves on the Town Council.

Spaduzzi was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court, G.A. No. 23, on May 7, 2008. The charges are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty.

Unlawful Possession of an Absentee Ballot is a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison on each count. Conspiracy to Possess an Absentee Ballot is also a Class D felony.

The case was investigated with the assistance of the Elections Enforcement Commission, and is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office.
