CSAO: Public Safety and Security Committee - March 4, 2014 - H.B. No. 5388

TESTIMONY OF THE DIVISION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

IN SUPPORT OF:

H.B. NO. 5388: AN ACT CONCERNING THE PENALTY FOR ASSAULT OF FIRE MARSHALS, DEPUTY FIRE MARSHALS, FIRE INSPECTORS, BUILDING OFFICIALS AND ASSISTANT BUILDING OFFICIALS

JOINT COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY
March 4, 2014

The Division of Criminal Justice supports H.B. No. 5388, An Act Concerning the Penalty for Assault of Fire Marshals, Deputy Fire Marshals, Fire Inspectors, Building Officials and Assistant Building Officials. Section 53a-167c of the General Statutes currently provides for an enhanced penalty for assault committed against a variety of professionals, including public safety, emergency medical, public transit and health care personnel.

H.B. No. 5388 would amend this statute to allow for the same enhanced penalty for assault committed against a fire marshal, deputy fire marshal, fire inspector, building official or assistant building official. Individuals in these professions face the same potential danger in the course of fulfilling their professional responsibilities and thus this would be an appropriate extension of the existing law.

In conclusion, we thank the Committee for this opportunity to provide input on this matter. We would be happy to answer any questions or to provide any additional information the Committee might require. Thank you.
