“Insured losses from the October snowstorm in Connecticut are extremely difficult to estimate with certainty until adjuster/claims information is reported by the companies. Industry representatives expect claims activity to increase once power is restored and people can safely return to their homes and businesses. The Department’s preliminary estimate of $500 million was a rough extrapolation from a number of industry observations on seasonal averages and estimates of economic losses. A $1 billion figure was inadvertently attributed to the Insurance Information Institute for this specific snowstorm, however that figure reflected an annual average insured loss of winter storms.”
