Military History Initiative

The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism has documented the route through Connecticut of General Rochambeau and French troops under his command in the summer of 1781 and again in the fall of 1782.  In July, 1780, King Louis XVI of France sent almost 6,000 highly trained troops to assist the Americans in the war against the British.  The French landed in Newport, Rhode Island, and marched over Connecticut's rough roads on their way to Yorktown,  Virginia.

The project was composed of three parts: the first examined historic maps to establish the route; the second undertook historic archaeology at the encampments; and the third inventoried historic buildings, markers, and monuments directly associated with Rochambeau.

The above-ground survey of buildings and monument was conducted by Dr. Robert Selig, whose research on Rochambeau has been extensively published in American Heritage, Colonial Williamsburg; the Journal of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation; and Military History Quarterly. Dr. Selig has also published findings related to the Rochambeau campaign from primary sources in French and German archives. The archaeological research and fieldwork related to the encampments was led by historical archaeologist Mary Harper and historian Bruce Clouette of the Public Archaeology Survey Team. A guidebook to the route is available for purchase from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.

Connecticut Militia Heritage Committee

Built on a partnership between the Connecticut Military Department, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, and the Museum of Connecticut History, the Connecticut Militia Heritage Committee promotes original research in topics concerning Connecticut’s military history, curates the exhibitions in the Connecticut Militia Heritage Gallery (west wing of the Hartford State Armory) and sponsors a lunchtime lecture in May during national Historic Preservation Week.

An illustrated tour guide of the Hartford State  Armory and Arsenal is available. Exhibitions in the Armory’s Connecticut Militia Heritage Gallery feature a timeline history of the militia and Connecticut National Guard; African American regiments; historic postcards of armories around the state; uniforms; and a pictorial history of the construction of the State Armory. A special exhibition tells the story of Rochambeau’s march through the state.
