Governor Rell Urges Legislature to Accept
Donated Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced she is urging the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Legislative Management – which operates the state Capitol and the adjacent Legislative Office Building (LOB) – to help “pave the way” for electric vehicles in Connecticut by accepting the proposed donation of two vehicle charging stations.
Northeast Utilities (NU) and Connecticut manufacturer Control Modules Industries have each offered to install charging stations at no cost to the state. NU has proposed to install a charging station at the LOB, while Control Modules Industries has offered to install a station in the outdoor parking lot that surrounds the Capitol.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to not only provide a service to the public but to provide proof positive that the State of Connecticut is dedicated to enhancing its electric vehicle infrastructure and cutting our dependence on oil,” Governor Rell said. “Putting these charging locations in prominent, public locations shows clearly that we are committed to the future and to moving away from our thirst for fossil fuels.
“I created an Electric Vehicles Infrastructure Council in 2009 that is working with a wide range of agencies and partners to help pave the way for this important new technology in Connecticut,” the Governor said. “I can think of few more appropriate demonstrations of our support for electric vehicles than to welcome them to our central government buildings in this very public way.”
Established by Executive Order No. 34, the Governor’s Electric Vehicles Infrastructure Council has been tasked with preparing the state for a rapid and seamless integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the market. A final report is due to Governor Rell on September 1 of this year.
