10/31/2008Gov. Rell Announces $100 Million Loan Program for Connecticut Businesses
  Connecticut’s community and regional banks, working with her Administration, are making $100 million in direct loans available to businesses and manufacturers as a key element of Governor Rell’s five-point program to ensure the continued free flow of credit in the state’s economy.

  Gov. Rell announced that Social Security disability claims will be put on a “fast track” for individuals with cancer and other rare diseases as part of the federal agency’s Compassionate Allowances initiative.

  The interactive budget can be accessed by clicking on the “Budget Forum” link on the Governor’s Web site at: www.ct.gov/governorrell. One of the prime features is the “Submit Ideas” section that provides an online suggestion form for the public to share suggestions on anything from the overall budget to state services.

  Gov. Rell reminded residents that care packages to deployed troops should be sent before the end of October in order to arrive by Thanksgiving. Items may be mailed to or dropped off at a tax-exempt, Connecticut-based organization, Give2TheTroops, Inc. (www.give2thetroops.org).

  "I want to avoid cuts to municipal budgets and hikes to local property taxes if at all possible. I do not want to see taxes raised on our citizens at either the local or the state levels. To accomplish that, we need to look to the core functions of state government. The size of government and the amount it spends will have to be reduced."

  Gov. Rell met this morning with several mayors and first selectmen to brief them on the most up-to-date economic forecast for the state, including her plans to cover a $300 million budget shortfall and her commitment to avoid new taxes and protect municipal aid.

10/14/2008Gov. Rell Announces Plan for Heating Aid to Senior Citizens
  Eligible seniors must be a state resident, age 65 or older as of November 1, who cannot make timely payments on bills for deliverable fuels (generally heating oil or propane), electricity or natural gas. The program would pay a one-time benefit of up to $500 directly to the supplier or utility that heats the beneficiary’s home. Applicants will need to prove they are responsible for paying for heating by showing a copy of a bill in either name or their spouse’s name reflecting costs incurred between November 1, 2008, and May 15, 2009.
