The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will
conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 03271 in
Newtown. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. An inclement
weather date of Wednesday, February 26, 2014 has also been reserved.
The existing bridge consists of a single-span concrete slab founded on stone rubble
masonry abutments and wingwalls. The bridge supports Route 302 over an unnamed
brook in the town of Newtown and is located approximately 250-feet west of the Route
302 intersection with Route 25.
The bridge carries one lane of traffic in each direction. The existing bridge has a curb-to-
curb width of 28-feet. The estimated 2012 Average Daily Traffic on Route 302 at this site
is 8,800 vehicles.
The purpose and need for the project is to address the bridge’s structural deficiencies
and functional obsolescence. The bridge is structurally deficient due to the poor condition
of the superstructure and the bridge is functionally obsolete due to insufficient bridge
The proposed bridge replacement will result in approximately 450-feet of roadway
construction. An exclusive left-turn lane from Route 302 to Route 25 will be included in
the proposed design. The proposed roadway width on the bridge is 43-feet with two 11-
foot travel lanes, one 11-foot left-turn lane and two 5-foot shoulders.
The bridge will be constructed in three stages while maintaining two lanes of traffic on-
site during construction.
Work is anticipated to begin in summer 2015. The replacement of this bridge is to
be undertaken with Federal and State funds.
Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project. More
