Replacement of Bridge No. 03271, Route 302 over an unnamed brook in the town of Newtown

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will

conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 03271 in

Newtown.  The meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.  An inclement

weather date of Wednesday, February 26, 2014 has also been reserved.

The existing bridge consists of a single-span concrete slab founded on stone rubble

masonry abutments and wingwalls. The bridge supports Route 302 over an unnamed

brook in the town of Newtown and is located approximately 250-feet west of the Route

302 intersection with Route 25.

The bridge carries one lane of traffic in each direction. The existing bridge has a curb-to-

curb width of 28-feet. The estimated 2012 Average Daily Traffic on Route 302 at this site

is 8,800 vehicles.

The purpose and need for the project is to address the bridge’s structural deficiencies

and functional obsolescence. The bridge is structurally deficient due to the poor condition

of the superstructure and the bridge is functionally obsolete due to insufficient bridge

deck width.

The proposed bridge replacement will result in approximately 450-feet of roadway

construction. An exclusive left-turn lane from Route 302 to Route 25 will be included in

the proposed design. The proposed roadway width on the bridge is 43-feet with two 11-

foot travel lanes, one 11-foot left-turn lane and two 5-foot shoulders.

The bridge will be constructed in three stages while maintaining two lanes of traffic on-

site during construction.

Work is anticipated to begin in summer 2015. The replacement of this bridge is to

be undertaken with Federal and State funds.

Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project.  More

detailed information is available at the Department’s Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin

Turnpike, Newington, Connecticut, during office hours, Monday through Friday,

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.  Anyone wishing to review the plans may

contact Mr. Louis D. Bacho at (860) 594-3212 or Louis.Bacho@ct.gov to make an

appointment.

All persons interested in this project are welcome to attend this meeting and discuss the

project with Department personnel.

This Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public

participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community

may have concerning the proposed projects.
