Public Information Meeting, Project No. 157-83 in Weston
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 01023, which carries Route 57 over the West Branch of the Saugatuck River, in the town of Weston. The meeting will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., in the Meeting Room of the Weston Town Hall, 56 Northfield Road, Weston, Connecticut. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014.
Bridge No. 01023 carries Route 57 over the West Branch of Saugatuck River in Weston. The existing structure, built in 1933, is a single span concrete arch structure with monolithic parapet/retaining walls founded on ledge rock. Gravel fill above the arch supports a bituminous concrete roadway. The curb-to-curb width is 31.3 feet, which is slightly less than the approach roadway width of 33 feet. The out-to-out width is 37.2 feet. The concrete balustrade parapets have been faced with metal beam rail. The structure has no skew angle relative to the stream, and has a total length of 28 feet with a clear span of 24 feet. The West Branch of the Saugatuck River is dammed south of the bridge, forming Cobbs Mill Pond. The roadway surface is about 9 feet above the water and the depth of water beneath the structure is about 6 feet.
The project has received a federal grant to use the “Bridge-in-a-Backpack” technology to accelerate bridge construction using prefabricated fiber reinforced polymer tubes with self-consolidating concrete. The new bridge will be a pre-engineered composite/concrete arch, supported by cast-in-place concrete footings. The footings will be fully bearing on rock. A curb-to-curb width of 34 feet will be provided to accommodate a 12-foot travel lane and 5-foot shoulder in each direction. The proposed structure will have a clear span of 40 feet and will be constructed on a similar roadway alignment as the existing structure.
The construction will be performed utilizing a complete closure of Route 57, with traffic detoured along surrounding State Routes. The detour will be limited to a duration of four weeks, during the Summer when school is not in session. No impacts to private property are anticipated as a result of this project. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2015 with activities such as utility relocation prior to the closure. The estimated construction cost is $2,250,000.
The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.
